How Long Does Smart Serve Take to Complete?

Course access lasts 30 days from purchase, the final test is untimed at about 30 minutes, and your certificate arrives about 2 hours later. Here is the full timeline.

You can go from buying the Smart Serve course to holding a certificate in a single day. The training is self-paced and the final test is untimed, at about 30 minutes on average. Your certificate then takes about 2 hours to reach you.

The number that actually constrains you is different. Your course access expires 30 days after purchase, and once it expires you cannot open the training or the final test.

This guide breaks the timeline into its real parts so you can plan around a start date.

Your 30 days of access is the real deadline

Smart Serve is direct about the window: all courses expire within 30 days of purchase. After that you cannot access the training or the final test, and the fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.

So do not buy the course to reserve your place and come back later. Buy it when you have time in the next few weeks to work through it and sit the test.

Timing matters most when a job is waiting. Anyone who sells, serves, delivers or offers samples of alcohol must complete their training before their first day. Your 30 days start at purchase, not at your start date, so buy once you know you can finish.

The training is self-paced

Inside those 30 days you set the pace. Smart Serve saves your progress, and their help centre puts it simply: you can start and stop your training as often as you like.

That suits shift work well. Twenty minutes before a shift, half an hour on a day off, and the reading is done. It also means an evening of focused study can carry you through the whole thing.

For a sense of scale, our own free Smart Serve course runs to 14 lessons and about 80 minutes of reading. That is one long sitting or three short ones, and it covers the same five areas as the official training.

The final test has no time limit

There is no time limit on the final test. Smart Serve says the average is about 30 minutes, and the retail page tells its readers to expect roughly the same.

Untimed comes with one condition. You complete the test in one sitting and you stay in camera view from the moment you start. Book a quiet half hour rather than assuming you can pause.

Before you launch, get your setup right. You need a working web camera, a working microphone, and valid government issued photo identification to show before the test begins. A proctor flag for a violation costs you the attempt, even if your score passed.

You do not book an appointment

There is no appointment to schedule and no test centre to travel to. You can launch the test any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The final test is also mobile friendly, so a phone works if that is what you have.

That removes the queue that other exams make you join. The waiting time between deciding to sit and sitting is however long it takes you to find a quiet room.

Our Smart Serve test guide covers the session end to end, from purchase through ID verification to results.

About 2 hours from test to certificate

After you submit, the screen shows you a list of the questions you answered incorrectly. Correct answers are not provided.

Your result then goes through proctor review. Allow about 2 hours for that review and for the certificate to be issued. Your digital eCertificate appears in the My Results tab of your Smart Serve account, and plastic cards are no longer mailed.

Once issued, the certificate is valid for 5 years from the date of issue. Save a copy where you can find it, because your employer may need to show it.

Two realistic plans

Here is how the timeline looks depending on how much runway you have.

PlanWhat you doElapsed time
One dayStudy first, then buy the course, work through it, sit the testAn afternoon plus about 2 hours
One weekBuy the course, read a module a night, sit the test at the weekend5 to 7 days, well inside the 30

The one-day plan works because the free study happens before the clock starts. Read our free course and sit a free practice test before you pay anything. Your 30 days only begin when you buy.

Whichever plan you pick, sit a full mock test before the real one. Ours matches the real test at 33 questions with a pass mark of 27. A comfortable mock score is a good signal that you are ready.

Study Smart Serve is an independent study aid. Smart Serve sells and delivers the official course and final test at smartserve.ca.
